Maldives surftrip with LUEX

Exploring the Maldives, cruising the pristine blue waters of the Indian Ocean aboard a charter with 6 fun people, catching epic waves and getting barreled... This was only a dream for all of my life!

Until I found out Line Up Explorers (LUEX.com) on the web, in 2009.

I got in contact with them and I got an instant reply. We talked on the phone and I just felt like this was a very reliable company.

A week later my spot on a charter was booked - I was in for the surf trip of my life! 12 days in the Maldives south attols!

The Kethi

After the flights (Munich - Male via Dubai) I was met by a representant of the charter at the Male Airport. He took me to meet the other 6 people who were aboard a small boat, which took us to the real charter just 20 minutes away: The Kethi.

Welcome drinks

First spot check and... it was pumping! Left handers rolling down the reef! I don't even remember the name of this wave. All I know is that it was the only time we surfed with someone else. From here on it was all empty line ups, just for ourselves!

The crew was really nice and the cook was excellent. Every day 3 meals, breakfast like a king, lunch and dinner. The guide also surfed with us and told us about the conditions of each spot.

We surfed every single day, 3 times a day. The waves gave us no rest. Come aboard eat some cookies, drink some tea or water and... go back out! Have lunch and... go back out! The dingy took us to where the waves broke so there was no need to paddle a lot.

We scored really epic waves. The Maldives are accessible to most levels of surf but sometimes the level can rise a little bit more with low tides, causing waves to become more hollow but still fun!

Getting barreled

All I have to say is that I had the opportunity to improve my surf a lot, have fun with amazing people, from Australia and Germany, explore some islands... and feel like a surfer in the surf movies!

I really miss this feeling of freedom and stoke of being in the middle of nowhere with my thoughts and some good people, simply enjoying waves. See some more pictures below.

Não deixo de sentir alguma tristeza. Morreu um ícone do skate e um dos meus ídolos do "surf no asfalto". Jay Adams, um dos mais puros Z-Boys, faz agora parte do mural da história do skate. 

I can't help feeling a bit sad. An icon and one of my skateboarding idols passed away. Jay Adams, one of Z-Boys purest skater is now part of skateboarding's history wall.

Anos 70, Califórnia. Zephir Surfboards, uma loja de surf, junta uns quantos putos (Z-Boys) e leva-os a competir em diversos locais na California, onde apresentam um estilo rebelde e agressivo de skate, completamente diferente do habitual até então. 
Tinham também o costume de invadir propriedades abandonadas, com piscinas vazias e skatar "ondas infinitas", em cimento. Uma das piscinas ficou especialmente famosa pelo seu nome "Dogbowl", o que veio a dar origem a que toda essa zona de Venice Beach na Califórnia, passasse a ser conhecida como Dogtown. 
Não habituados ás luzes da ribalta os rapazes seguiram vidas diferentes. Tony Alva e Stacy Peralta, tornam-se profissionais, com contratos e lançam as suas próprias marcas. Jay Adams segue um rumo mais marginal, associando mais o skate com hábitos menos bons mas mantendo viva a chama do hardcore skate.
As causas da morte apontam para problemas cardíacos.

70's, California. Zephir Surfboars, a surfshop, gathers a bunch of kids to assemble a surf team and takes them around the state to compete in championships, where they present themselves with a unique style of agressive skateboarding.
They would also often sneak into private properties and skate the endless wave of concrete, inside people's empty swiming pools. One of those pools became famous for its name and gave the neme to all that ares which includes Venice Beach: Dogtown.
Not used at being in the spotlight the boys went into diferent lifepaths. Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta became professionals and signed up for brands. Jay Adams chooses a marginal way of life ending up associating skate with perhaps less good habits but keeping the hardcore spirit of skate alive.

Ithaka

A alma de Ithaka emana música. O sotaque americano não se esconde, na maneira como fala português e na saudade que transmite ao contar a história da sua vida.
Da Califórnia para muitos lugares inclusive Lisboa, de Lisboa para a Amazónia, onde escolheu viver hoje em dia, isolado do Mundo para conseguir a inspiração vital para criar. A sua música já passou na rádio, as sua voz pelas colunas no Alcantara-Mar. As suas crónicas "Fishdaddy Chronicles" já foram publicadas em muitas das revistas de surf que existem. Criou duzentas e cinquenta esculturas a partir de pranchas de surf a que chamou Reincarnation of a Surfboard".
Da escultura á música, passando pela escrita a arte de Ithaka não se limita a nenhum nível. Usa e inventa os elementos que forem necessários para chegar ao seu objectivo. Chocante e inovador é assim que o classifico. 
Independentemente da minha opinião sobre o seu trabalho, Ithaka é um ícone incontornável que marcou quem o conheceu e certamente a nossa cultura.

Ithaka's soul emanates music. His american accent doesn't hide behind the way he speaks portuguese or the feeling he transmits when he tells about his life.
From California to many places including  Lisboa, from Lisboa to Amazonia, where he chose to life nowadays isolated from the world in order to be able to create. His music has played in the radio as in the speakers of famous clubs in Portugal. His "FishdaddyChronicles" were published in surf magazines all over the world. He created a two hundred and fifty sculpture collection to which he called "Reincarnation Of A Surfboard".
From sculpture to music, passing through writing, Ithaka's art doesn't confine to any level. He uses and invents all the elements that he finds necessary to achieve his goal. Shoking and innovative it's how I classify him.
Aside from my opinion about his work, Ithaka is an undeniable icon who marked the ones who knew him and certainly our culture too.

...Ou ter nadado tanto que nem me consigo mexer no fim do dia. 

Sei que vou dormir que nem um calhau, mas ainda não quero, porque quero aproveitar bem cada bombada de sangue que vai para o cérebro, para deixar aqui um um registo qualquer. Qualquer coisa, só para agradecer a quem, ou ao que, me fez e me continua a fazer querer surfar até nunca mais.
É certamente, o que pensa toda a gente que persegue na vida, aquilo que gosta. 

Á exaustão! Porque tudo o que se faz por gosto, não cansa!

I know I am gonna sleep like a rock, but not yet, because I want to enjoy each blood pump flowing to the brain to leave some lines here.
Just something,  to thank to who or what has made and keeps making me want to surf forever.
It is certainly what everyone who pursuits their dreams in life thinks.

Das mãos do realizador Tito da Costa saiu, em 2001, o primeiro filme de surf português: "Summer One".

Directed by Tito da Costa, "Summer One" (2001) is the first portuguese surf movie.

Estive com Tito da Costa no "Sagres Surf Culture" de 2013 e perguntei-lhe se ele achava, em termos de cultura linguística, se os americanos estavam mais evoluídos que nós, porque o surf se expandiu rapidamente para muitos sectores da vida. Ao que ele respondeu: "Se estiveres muito tempo fora, por muito evoluída que seja uma cultura, terás sempre muito mais a encontrar, na nossa língua, como no fado, por exemplo." Concordo.

I was with Tito da Costa at the "Sagres Surf Culture" event last year and I asked him if he considered americans more evolved in terms of surf linguistics, because surfing had spread out so fast into so many areas of life over there. To which he replied: "If you're away for awhile, as evolved as a culture may be, you will always have much more to find in your own culture and language, take the "fado", as an example." I agree.

Quem anda na praia há algum tempo, de certeza que se lembra de ver uma carrinha branca com "MARMARMAR.com". Esse foi um projecto pioneiro para a altura, no surf em Portugal. Tito, juntamente com a sua equipa, rodavam o país e não só, reportando tudo o que se passava á volta dos campeonatos, basicamente a viver de patrocínios, no site (que já não existe).
A dada altura, sentiu algumas limitações tecnológicas e agarrou a oportunidade de ir estudar, primeiro para Londres e depois, nos estúdios da Universal em Los Angeles. Aí ficou durante cerca de dez anos a dar asas á imaginação e a criar a sua bonita família.

MARMARMAR.com (which no longer exists) was a project in which Tito and his casting team travelled the country and not only, documenting all news around championships. Surviving from spnsors on the website, only. At a certain point he felt limited by the existing technology in Portugal so he went to study abroad. First London and then Universal Studios in LA. And there he stayed for about 10 years raising his beautiful family and giving wings to his creativity.

A sua mais recente aventura é uma longa-metragem e chama-se "Road To Red". Conta a história de um campeão de skate que desaparece misteriosamente. A sua carrinha é encontrada junto a um lago, e a sua prancha a flutuar. Os amigos prestam-lhe uma homenagem e subitamente decidem fazer uma viagem e perseguir o seu sonho. "Trazer o surf de volta ao skate!!!". 
Estreia, não se sabe onde, nem se sabe quando. 
Mas considerem-se avisados.

His most recent adventure is a movie called "Road To Red". It tells the story about a former skate champion who disappears misteriously. His van is found by a lake where his surfboard is floating. The friends decide to pay him an homage and go on a trip chasing their ultimate dream "to bring surfing back to skateboarding!".
It premieres somewhere, sometime. 
So consider yourselves warned. 

Blood Brothers Inc.

Conheci a "BloodBrothers Incorporated", em Sagres, há sensivelmente um ano.
Ao investigar sobre a cultura visual ligada ao surf, não foi preciso "escavar" muito para encontrar estes senhores.
O nome sugere logo uma união muito forte, uma irmandade, um voto para a vida. E mostra que, da união entre o surf e a vida, podem nascer as mais fortes relações. Até de sangue!
Esta união centra-se num núcleo de dois artistas portugueses, visionários no seu género.



I met "Blood Brothers Incorporated" in Sagres about a year ago.
Investigating about the visual culture associated to surf, it did not took too much "digging" to find these gentleman.
The name suggests a very strong union, a brotherhood, a vowel for life. And it shows that from the union between surfing and life the strongest relationships can be born. Even of blood!
This union is centered in a nucleus of two emerging Portuguese artists, visionary in their style.


Marco Taínha, mestre dos pigmentos e da laminação de pranchas assim como da sua manufactura, cria autênticas obras de arte flutuantes. As tatuagens cobrem-lhe grande parte dos braços, fazendo transparecer a sua alma, para a pele.
Bruno Vinagre, com a sua mão criativa pinta e desenha em qualquer tela com a sua marca "core", que me traz á imaginação elementos tipicamente old-school skate/surf, com tendências icónicas desde o punk/grunge até ao mais limpo e "bem-dobradinho".

Marco Taínha is a pigment and surfboard lamination master, as well as creator of the most authentic pieces of floating art. His soul comes out through tattoos that cover most of his arms.
On the other "half" with his creative hand, Bruno Vinagre draws and paints his "core" brand in any canvas, that brings to my imagination typical old-school boardculture elements, with iconic tendencies from punk/grunge to the clean and "neat".

Para além da sua divisão do surf, ainda personalizam partes de motos, de bicicletas, e têm tempo para se dedicarem a outras paixões que os complementam, como o skate, a música ou o jiu-jitsu brasileiro. Também têm um blog e uma conta no facebook onde nos mostram fotografias das suas criações e do seu seu dia-a-dia.
Vivem fieis a si próprios, aos seus ideais e ao surf e para ele transmitem os valores da entreajuda e da aceitação. A união faz a força!

Besides their surfboard division, they also customize bikes and motorbike parts and they still have the time to dedicate to the passions which complement them,like skate, music or Brazilian jiu-jitsu. They also own a blog and a facebook account where they show us their creations and day-to-day life.
They live faithfully to themselves, to their ideals and to the surf carrying the values of mutual help and tolerance. "Together we are stronger!"
